PostSubject: One of my kitties passed on today :(   Mon Jul 19, 2010 4:30 pm

She was 13 and had never been a really healthy kitty but I had managed to stay on top of most of her health problems till now. She had a tumor in her mouth, had it removed by laser 3 times, kept recurring and also her liver had started to fail. so the vet recommended we let her go. I stayed with her, was very quick and she didn't seem to suffer, just drifted off. They gave her a strong sedative first.

I did end up crying, couldn't help it, but managed to get myself under control when I had to leave to go to the desk. I will miss that mean old kitty! She was grumpy but we loved her all the same.

Ugh.. I feel for you!

I've been going through the same thing with Spot but he's actually doing a tad better right now. But I've already shed some tears at times when he hasn't been doing well. He's only 12.

With Webster it was quick. I didn't enjoy that trip either. Then I get to bury them.

Speaking of Spot.... the last 3 visits I've been told to think about 'what is the cat doing for me, not what I'm doing for the cat' or the 'quality of life' speech.

I started out the last 3 visits with my own 'quality of life' speech. Spot is pretty normal in all activities aside from him being 3rd world skinny and his mouth probs and on and off diabetes. I refuse to put him down until it is something dire, not because he has a hard time eating. He can easily eat enough to stay alive. He even still tries to mount Cotton.

They may see a bunch of cats and feel they need to be put down, but Spot is not near anything what I've seen worthy of putting down. I will treat him and if he dies in the course of that, fine. If he gets a terminal problem, fine. But he isn't near death, just in bad shape.

What is the cat doing for me? Well, he's given me 12 years of great joy, the best alpha cat I've ever had, there is no real replacement for him in my herd unless one of the kittens grows up to be just as cool and badass. So, in return for his 12 years of love, he deserves everything I can do for him. I do believe I will get mad at the vets if they say 'quality of life' or 'what is the cat doing for you?' his next checkup.

I know exactly what you're going through. I tried not to cry, but I ended up sobbing in the room for quite a while. Apollo was 20 years old. *damn, I'm tearing up now* But the people at my vet are really nice. They just let me cry. And they sent me a sympathy card. LOL

You tellem, Neckipoo. Our critters really don't want to leave us. You will know when it is time. He will let you know, and damn the cold-hearted bastard vet.

Smoochies

Yes I do think the cat will let you know when it is time!

I probably let her stay a little too long but wanted to give her the most chance to get better.

Spot is actually doing better this month. He was supposed to have a checkup in the middle of July but I was mad and Spot is doing well after his fluid IV, depo and pain med. He's wandering around and coming in to eat. He's no where near, even close, to needing to be put down.

On another note... Sam has lost no weight this summer at all. Normally he's lost 3 lbs or so, not this year, big ol 17 lb cat Razz

First it was Yang with the swollen face, now Carmen... I'm now thinking its from cutting teeth.

They do let you know when they are ready. Except my last kitty before the new ones- she never gave up and kept fighting until her body shut down, I think she was already unconscious when I had her put to sleep. Sometimes I think I let it go on too long but I didn't want to pull her up short while she was still fighting.

Spot will get every chance. He's eating more and more, has gained a bit of weight, gonna take time. He starts his antibiotics today and is doing so well I'm hoping this round really helps.

It was his low blood sugar that caused the last round of death rattle. We'll see how he is after Tuesday's checkup. Right now he's stable with a tad of mouth prob.
